SOMS Student Wins Scholastic's "Grant My Wish" Contest

ELA teacher, Regina Cooper and Contest Winner, Cain Trevino

Cain's winning drawing.

6th grade ELA teacher Regina Cooper encourages all of her students to showcase their gifts when opportunities arise.  Cain Trevino, a talented artist in Mrs. Cooper’s class, entered Scholastic’s “Grant My Wish” drawing contest.  Cain was one of six students selected as a winner out of over 10,000 entries from all over the country!  Cain’s effort has afforded him the opportunity to select $250 worth of books and materials from Scholastic.  As an added bonus, Mrs. Cooper will also have her choice of books from Scholastic in the amount of $250.  Hard work definitely pays off!  Congratulations, Cain, for a job well done!

Spring Oaks Student Selected for 2015 JASON Argonaut Research Team

8th grade Science Teacher, Kari Young with Blondine Delva

Congratulations to Blondine Delva, who won a national scholarship competition to become a member of the 2015 JASON Argonaut Science Research Team. Blondine will travel to the Bahamas with a team of professional scientists and 10 other scholars from around the country to study science topics such as climate change and marine biology. This $12,500 scholarship is generously funded by Chevron. In order to win this award, Blondine wrote four essays, got two teacher referrals, and made a video introduction for the scholarship board. Blondine’s hard work paid off with an awesome scholarship.

Congratualtions, Blondine! You will represent SOMS well!

Spring Oaks MS Choirs Awarded Sweepstakes at UIL Competition

JV Girls Choir

Advance Choir
On March 2, 2015, the Spring Oaks Middle School JV girls choir and advanced choir went to UIL competition.

The students receive ratings from 1 to 5 – one being the highest – in two different areas of competition.

In the concert competition, the students sang music that they had prepared for a panel of three judges.
In the sight reading competition, the students sang a piece of music that they had never seen, for a panel of three different judges.

Choirs that receive a rating of 1 (superior) from both panels of judges, receive what is called a "sweepstakes" award.  This is the highest rating that a choir can achieve at UIL competition.

We are so proud that BOTH the JV girls choir and advanced choir received a sweepstakes award at UIL competition this year.
Way to go Spring Oaks choir!

This year is the 17th consecutive year in which a Spring Oaks choir has earned a sweepstakes award. Congratulations choir members-because of your hard work and dedication, the long tradition of excellence continues!
